Sleep Disorders

Insomnia and disrupted sleep are treated with melatonin, prescription drugs or OTC (over the counter) drugs. People who use these methods report waking up in the middle of the night and/or they awaken groggy and unrefreshed. These are common causes of disrupted sleep:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • trauma
  • grief
  • night sweats
  • poor sleep hygiene
  • sleep apnea
  • stress
  • waking up at a certain time

Treatment of sleep disorders require consistent office visits in the first month. The frequency of treatment will depend on the associated causes of insomnia and their severity. Two office visits per week for the first two weeks is needed to establish care. Herbal supplements can be part of the treatment plan.

Acupuncture and herbal supplements are treatment options to increase the quantity and quality of sleep. Patients can anticipate their desire to discontinue the use of sleep aides. Once their sleep improves office visits will be reduced to once every 6 weeks for the next 6 months.
